Principal's Welcomehttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/About%20Our%20School/Pages/Principal%27s-Welcome.aspx, Principal's WelcomePrincipal's WelcomeOn behalf of the St John Vianney's school community I warmly welcome you to our school. We have a wonderful partnership with our Parish Priest, Fr Dantus Thottahil and the Parish of St John Vianney's. The ministry of education is one that is shared between parents, teachers and the wider community. As Principal, I will support you in nurturing and promoting the growth of our children as we reflect the life and mission of Jesus, promoting a vibrant spiritual life through learning, prayer and liturgy. My commitment to Catholic Education is lived out through my active involvement in Parish and school life and living out the Gospel values through our words and actions. I have a passion for living out the work of Nano Nagle by working with the poor and marginalised.
Learning and Teachinghttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/Curriculum/Pages/default.aspx, Learning and TeachingLearning and TeachingCentral to curriculum planning at St John Vianney’s Primary School is the Brisbane Catholic Education Learning Framework which sets out the beliefs and values on which learning is based. Reading Opens Doorshttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Reading-Opens-Doors.aspxReading Opens Doors

As part of our Reconciliation Week activities beginning 30 May, we are pleased to be holding a Great Book Swap, an initiative of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This year the ILF are aiming to raise $150,000 to gift 15,000 new books to remote communities. The books are carefully chosen so they are culturally appropriate, and over 40% are by Indigenous authors or illustrators. Author Gregg Dreise, who our children enjoyed so much last year, and Andy Griffiths, another popular Australian children’s author, are both ambassadors for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

The SJV Great Book Swap will be held Thursday 2 June for Years 3 – 6 and on Friday 3 June for Prep – 2. The process is simple; please assist your child in selecting one of their books to bring to school to swap for another book. The book should be in good condition, one your child thinks their classmates will enjoy and they are happy to donate. The book does not have to be new and should not be a special book that has an inscription in the front. We ask that along with a book, you send in a gold coin donation that will go directly to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

By swapping a book, we want to share our love of books and make reading possible for every Australian child, especially those living in very remote areas. By swapping a book and contributing a gold coin donation, it is a small but generous act of kindness, and a way for your child to see that together we can make a difference to another child’s life.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge started this Monday and reading continues until the 21 August. Many students will be keeping their reading record in their library bag, so please remind your child to record their books when they are finished. Those students participating in the Readers Cup are certainly keen, with groups reading and swapping books in the library this week. Well done, 3 more weeks to go!

NAPLANhttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/NAPLAN.aspxNAPLAN

This week our students in Years 3 & 5 have participated in NAPLAN Writing and Reading. We have had an intensive focus on preparing our learners to be assessment capable learners in Years 3 & 5, but we know that through our work with embedding the waterfall framework in all curriculum areas, we are preparing all students every day from Prep-Year 6.

What does it mean for students to be assessment capable?

They are aware of their current level of understanding in a learning area.

They understand their learning path and are confident enough to take on the challenge.

They can select tools and resources to guide their learning.

They seek feedback and recognise that errors are opportunities to learn.

They monitor their own progress and adjust course as needed.

They recognize what they’re learning and can teach others.

(Frey, Fisher & Hattie)

Assessment capable learners enact the deep knowledge we now possess about the significant roles that motivation, goal setting, self-regulation and feedback play in learning.

You can support us at home by preparing all children to be assessment capable learners by:

Talking to your child about their learning. Some children need no prompting at all and happily tell you about their day and learning and other children need support. Parents can use the newsletters that get sent home each week by class teachers to help you discuss the learning.

Encourage your children to accept and persist with challenges. Learning needs to have challenging and difficult moments and children need to know how to struggle and be successful with their learning.

Ask your children what feedback they are getting from their peers and teachers and encourage them to seek feedback and act on it.

Encourage your children to reflect on their own learning and support them with areas they want to grow in.

We were very proud of all our Years 3 & 5 children and how they have positively engaged with NAPLAN in such a confident way. We know our children are calm and confident learners.

Year 4 and Beyondhttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Year-4-and-Beyond.aspxYear 4 and Beyond

I have been excited to hear that several parents of boys in Year 4 are considering the possibility of their boys finishing their primary schooling with us in Years 5 & 6. I know this interest is also shared by parents in Prep – Year 3. We know that many families are wanting to have the nurturing and rich learning environment we provide here at St John Vianney's for the full journey of their child's primary school years. As I am sure you have heard from other parents, the Years 5 & 6 learning space is a dynamic and rich learning community that supports our learners and sets them up for success in high school.

I would encourage you to contact me if you are considering this option or are still unsure as I can organise a time to meet with you and the teaching team in Years 5 & 6 and other parents who are also interested. I also extend the invitation for parents of our girls to join in and find out more about our 5/6 Learning Community too.

Our senior students have a variety of sporting, musical, academic, spiritual and leadership opportunities over the last two years of primary school. As a parent and principal, I have seen first-hand the benefits of children having a Prep-Year 6 education at our school and allowing for future success.
