Principal's Welcomehttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/About%20Our%20School/Pages/Principal%27s-Welcome.aspx, Principal's WelcomePrincipal's WelcomeOn behalf of the St John Vianney's school community I warmly welcome you to our school. We have a wonderful partnership with our Parish Priest, Fr Frank Jones and the Parish of St John Vianney's. The ministry of education is one that is shared between parents, teachers and the wider community. As Principal, I will support you in nurturing and promoting the growth of our children as we reflect the life and mission of Jesus, promoting a vibrant spiritual life through learning, prayer and liturgy. My commitment to Catholic Education is lived out through my active involvement in Parish and school life and living out the Gospel values through our words and actions. I have a passion for living out the work of Nano Nagle by working with the poor and marginalised.
Learning and Teachinghttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/Curriculum/Pages/default.aspx, Learning and TeachingLearning and TeachingCentral to curriculum planning at St John Vianney’s Primary School is the Brisbane Catholic Education Learning Framework which sets out the beliefs and values on which learning is based. Year 4 Camphttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Year-4-Camp.aspxYear 4 Camp<p style="text-align:justify;">It was my great pleasure to join Year 4 on camp this week. I want to thank Miss Bennett, Mrs Arnold, Mr Hansell, Mrs Tannock, Mrs Ward and Mrs Tasi for being at camp over the last three days. It is a big responsibility taking children on camp and being away from their own families. The children are to be congratulated for their behaviour, their enthusiasm with activities and the way they supported each other so positively. </p><p style="text-align:justify;">While at camp I was able to reflect on how capable our children are in doing jobs at home. As parents, we are often busy and sometimes it is easier to do things ourselves but I encourage you to continue to develop independence and responsibility with your children at home by giving them jobs and responsibilities. For example, setting the table, cleaning up after meals, making the bed etc The Garmin watches have been great in setting up tasks for children to do! </p>
Library Newshttp://www.sjv.qld.edu.au/news-events/Pages/Library-News.aspxLibrary News<div style="text-align:justify;"><div>‘Game Changer! Book Access for All Kids.’ This is the title of the new book by American author Donalyn Miller. I was lucky enough this week to attend the book launch at the Reading Leaders PD with Donalyn, and once again, the worldwide data reaffirms what we know about children and reading - the more you read the greater the improvements will be. It is difficult in the busy lives we lead to make time for reading, however adding 10 minutes reading every day makes a difference. Research shows that reading improves our general knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, verbal fluency and spelling. A child in Year 5 who reads for 20 minutes a day for 1 year is exposed to 1,800,000 words. Comparatively, a child who only reads for 10 minutes a day is exposed to just 600,000. As Donalyn suggests, the more books your child has access to, the more their reading will improve. Here at SJV, we have fantastic book corners in every classroom, our beautiful library, events like the Great Book Swap and Book Fair ... all designed to provide book access to all of our children. </div><div><br>If you were making a wish list of what you wanted to spend time doing this weekend or these holidays, would reading be on your list? We need to model reading enjoyment to our children, sometimes we save our reading time for when the children are off doing something else and they don’t get to see us reading. So, if you can, pick up a book, magazine or newspaper this weekend, invite your child to choose a book too, and enjoy some reading time. </div><div><br>Congratulations to our Best Friends of the library this week 1J and 3J. </div></div>
