SJV STEM Journey

A recommendation from our school external review at the end of last year was to engage with STEM learning across all year levels. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) touches every aspect of our lives, from our smartphones to the technologies that enable us to explore the world around us. It also drives innovation in our fast-changing global economy. To succeed in this environment and for our students to continue to prosper into the future, they need a strong foundation in STEM.

I am proud of the engagement and progress we have made in the field of STEM education this year. This week SJV were invited to present our STEM journey in 2019 to other learning communities at the 1st Brisbane Catholic Education STEM showcase.

The following are some of our accomplishments this year:

  • SJV staff engagement in STEM Symposium
  • SJV school commitment to research project with University of Tasmania -‘Principals as STEM Leaders’
  • STEM Twilight – professional learning for all staff
  • Technology leadership group disseminated their expertise with year levels across the school (Sphero Robotics)
  • Year 5/6 learning community attended Gatton STEM & HASS Expo
  • Each year level trialled different STEM ideas with a focus on technologies

It’s truly an exciting time to be a young person exploring the various subjects and disciplines of STEM, and while the work is challenging, it’s also never been more invigorating to be an educator or educational leader devoted to furthering STEM education opportunities.
